Information Graphics
My initial interest in the use of information graphics was inspired by a lecture held at Grays School of Art by Swiss graphic designers Barbara Hahn and Christine Zimmerman near the start of my studies back in 2010. Hann and Zimmerman (1) state: "The greatest value of a picture is when it forces us to notice what we never expected to see". This is clearly demonstrated through their work which often shows hidden patterns in life which they present graphically. This inspired me to try and gather enough data for my project so I could begin to investigate this in my own practise. Whilst investigating different ways to present the data, I have read a number of books by Edward Tufte who has inspired me to produce a broad range of styles for my posters while holding on to the most important element which is to clearly present the information. In his book “Beautiful Evidence” Tufte (2) states: “Analytical presentation ultimately stands or falls depending on the quality, relevance, and integrity of their content.” Having gathered data on Crathes Castle over the period of two years I wholeheartedly agree with this statement and hope to show that the information I present through my posters stands up to this test. Another designer who has influenced my work is David McCandless. He takes a much more contemporary view of designing information graphics and designs statistical data in a modern way which clearly presents complex information in a quick and easy to comprehend style. This is an important factor to any information graphic and I need to be sure that the information I present is clear and correct. I have also been looking at the work of Josef Müller-Brockmann a Swiss graphic designer who’s work also has a timeless quality which makes it look as good today as it did back in the 1950’s. This timeless quality is something that I would like to introduce to my designs. I have divided the information graphics posters into three specific areas:
I also wanted to see if I could experiment with the designs further and this is shown in the final section. Reference: 1) Hann B & Zimmermann C. Guest at Grays Lecture, 11/3/10 2) Tufte E. Beautiful Evidence. Connecticut: Graphic Press; 2006. P. 136. |
